Show and Tell Friday

I guess it was pillow case week at the Lewis house. Here is my oldest daughter's first, on-her-own, sewing machine project. She is very proud of her flip-flop pillow case. She was in a class at a local sewing machine store and later in July and August she has more sewing classes at the local fabric store. She is really excited about sewing.

Flip-flops close up with accent strip and cuff

This is a pillowcase my DH made for our youngest daughter. I picked out the fabric and ribbon and was going to sew it but my "crafty/handy" hubby beat me to it. Did I mention he will also quilt, cook and make soap with me. He likes to create as much as I do.

Close up!

Show and Tell Friday

Every once in a while we break out the craft supplies and create. The above picture is of my middle daughter's party invites. Card stock, scrapbook paper, computer printed wording, scrapbook embellishment flowers, sequins and stamps. We had it all on hand and we had a blast creating. The flip flop was made from a quilting pattern I had from a magazine.

The back of the invite: More computer wording and stamps. Simple yet pretty!

Here's the front of our Father's Day card; card stock, stamps and individually cut out computer lettering.

This card has an inside, unlike the invites that are just a front and back. I wrote a message on the top portion and printed out pictures of the kids/dad fishing, cut them out and glued them in. For those of you wondering about the bottom picture... John was showing off his "Bogga Grip". (Last year's Father's Day gift.) It's a tool that helps you lift fish out of the water. He was demonstrating that it could lift up to a fifty pound fish by lifting our 30 pound three year old. Don't worry... it didn't hurt her. She kept asking for him to do it again. He only did it once.

Show and Tell Friday

Yesterday we cleaned out our garage! I found treasures I hadn't seen for three years. (Since we moved from Texas to Michigan). Two of my favorite quilt books. One big (see above).

One small!

Both are filled with beautiful pictures of quilts, as well as quotes about quilts and quilting history. I'm glad to have re-discovered these treasures.

Show and Tell Friday!

Baby Blocks, Drunkard's Path, Triangles, Grandmother's Fan (bottom left, counter-clockwise)

Rose of Sharon (in progress), Trip Around the World, Rail Fence, Maple Leaf (Bottom left, counter-clockwise)

Rail Fence, Trip Around the World (Again), Strip Rail, Card Trick (Top Left, counter-clockwise)

Spider's Web, Court House Steps (Bottom to top)

Log Cabin, Dresden Plate (Bottom to top)

Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I've participated in show and tell, but since I've gotten back into the quilting I thought I would show off my quilt blocks. They aren't perfect but I'm just a beginner and I'm okay with that. I hope to improve with time. I have 14 1/2 blocks made and have 6 1/2 to go before I can start to assemble the quilt and then quilt it. I'm using Lynne Edwards' Making A Sampler Quilt book, published by Reader's Digest (1996). The directions are easy to follow and I've been quite thrilled with my progress. I actually prefer hand stitching to machine work and I love applique!

Show and Tell Friday

I just received a wonderful gift. A wall plaque for my kitchen: My Kitchen Prayer.

It's not too much to look at (neither is my kitchen) but the words expressed are exactly me. One does not usually get such a perfect gift. My pastor's wife, Jill, knows me well. Thanks Jill!

Show and Tell Friday

Today I continued the raid of my linen closet.

I inherited two sets of embroidered dish towels. One set from each of my Grandmothers. One set shows a different bird for each day of the week and the other set show a different chicken and chore for each day of the week. (Okay, I'm partial to the chickens but I love both sets.)

There are 14 in all but I only had 4 available for photographs today. (Some are packed- we move a lot, and some are in the laundry)
I use them on a daily basis. They dry dishes, keep bread warm and serve as table art.

I plan to give each of my girls a hope chest. While I'm not ready to part with these towels yet, I do plan on embroidering a set of towels for each daughter. I can only hope they'll treasure the ones I make as much as I treasure the ones my grandmothers made.

Show and Tell Friday

For today's show and tell I pulled out my dish rags/towels.

The second picture is a pair of little pants stitched together from dish rags. It has this little message attached... "Now don't get excited, and don't lose your head: These aren't for you but your dishes instead. If you pull out the yarn and pull out the stitches, you'll have two dish cloths, but you'll lose your britches." My mother gave this to me at my wedding shower (almost 15 years ago). I love them so much that I don't intend to pull them apart and use the dish rags. I do intend to pass them on to the first of my daughters to get married.

The first picture is a towel and dish cloth bunny. Here is its message, "I'm more than a bunny all tied up with bows. I serve a real purpose, so everyone knows. Just untie my ribbons and there you will see, a towel and 2 dish cloths to remind you of me." This one I've only had for a few months. It was made at a ladies fellowship at church. Again, I don't think I'll be able to bring myself to take it apart and use it. I will probably pass this one on to a daughter as well.

Of course since I currently have three daughters, somewhere along the time line I'm going to have to come up with a third creation so one daughter doesn't get left out. It's an odd little collection, isn't it?

Show and Tell Friday

My Pastor and his wife were given these books and since they have no kids of their own they passed them on to my oldest daughter to loves to read. They are beautiful, old books; published in 1918. What a great addition to the book shelf. We are missing one of the set because it was damaged, but the rest are in good condition. Christmas Cactus Finally Blooms!

My pastor's wife gave me this cactus fall of 2006. She had had it for awhile and it had never bloomed. She asked if I thought I could get it to bloom. I have a very bad indoor plant reputation. I can only take plants that thrive on neglect, but I said sure I'd take it and give it a try. Finally about mid-December of 2007 (last month) it started getting buds. I thought, "Oh, boy I'll be able to give back the cactus as a Christmas present surprise but the first of the blooms didn't open up until two days ago.

Dana over at http://mysimplegifts.blogspot.com/ had her cactus blooming in Oct. or Nov. but I'm just happy to see this one bloom at all. It is a very sad looking thing, even with its blooms, but I am satisfied. It truly is a plant that thrives on neglect and then sudden over watering by children trying to help it.
Mrs U. over at http://makingahouseahome.blogspot.com had just asked a few days ago what we all had blooming and I told her I only had snow blooming. Well, Mrs. U. now I have real blooms!

Show and Tell Friday

One of the best things about having a birthday five days before Christmas is that I have great reason to use some of my "hospitality" orientated presents right away. My husband was spot on with his present to me: A four tiered dessert server. Of course every time I walked by it in Costco I was "oohing and ahhing" at it so it was an obvious pick... I made it that way on purpose. Now it sits on the table waiting for the rest of my Christmas baking and candy making to get done so I can fill it. Show and Tell Friday

My Grandmother gave me this ornament when I was a little girl. It has always been my favorite and remains so to this day. It hangs in a place of honor on my Christmas tree every year. There is a hitch... my DH thinks it is the ugliest thing he has ever seen and will move it to a place on the tree where no one can see it. We have this revolving game... I hang it, he moves it, I find it and move it back again. Good times! LOL! For more Show and Tells go to http://kellishouse.blogspot.com

Show and Tell Friday

My husband carved this "ball in a cage chain" from one solid piece of wood. No glue or special openings. I think he's quite talented and I love to show off his carvings.

Here is my great grandmother Schuh's German bible. I can't read much of it but I love the reminder of my Christian and German heritage. For more Show and Tell Fridays go to http://kellishouse.blogspot.com/ .

Show and Tell Fridays

I love chickens and roosters. These are my favorite decoration pieces. I found them about five years ago on e-bay. They are paperboard and were painted and decoupaged by a crafter and I loved them. I paid about $30 + shipping. Not a frugal purchase but I think to buy them in a boutique would have been much more expensive.

Show and Tell Fridays

This is my collections of quilts: The outer two were made for my two older girls by their Grandma Lewis, the inner two were started by my grandmother and finished by my mom after my grandmother's passing. My mom gave them to my girls.
